Week 39: Extra Sister, Trip to the Airport, Baptism, and Mothers Day Dance
HEAPS happened this week!!! And there's not enough time to email. Story of my life haha.
We got 3 missed calls early Tuesday morning from the AP's (Assistants to the President). Usually that means we're in trouble. So I called them back, and they told me they had an extra sister who was finishing her mission and was wondering if she could stay the night with us. Then we would drop her off at the airport the following day. So I quickly tried to make the flat a little more comfortable and clean for that sister. Her name was Sister Ulu. She's a cute, fun, bright, happy, Samoan sister, and she had actually been companions with Sister Lewis who was my companion for three weeks last December. It was fun to be in a trio again.
The next day we took her to the airport. We found the airport easy, it was trying to figure out which side of the airport we needed to be at. After finding a parking spot, we needed to check her bags and stuff. I'll admit we must have looked super weird having three Sister missionaries trying to figure out how to check bags and find security haha. Guess I don't have as much flying experience as I thought. I probably ended up calling the AP's like 10 times that morning haha, poor things.
I way overestimated how much time we would need to travel to the airport, so we spent and hour or so just looking at the stores and waiting for a better time to send her through security, because at the NZ airport only the passengers are allowed through security. They have a wall blocking the security lines so all we could do was wave to her as she walked through the hallway to security by herself. It was a really fun morning, but I felt really out of place being at an airport. Not quite ready to leave yet haha.
We had a baptism Saturday morning. He's one of the sons of our recent convert and he's just awesome. We love being around him!! We're so happy he followed his mom's example and got baptized too.
Later that day, we went to help prepare the ward for a Mother's Day Dance. The four of us missionaries were mainly in charge of the decorations and that's why we have weird pictures of us wrapped up in flowers. Their just Hawaiian leis braided together in one really long string. But I thought it looked pretty cool.
On our way to buy the leis, we saw a man standing in front of a well-loved car with Saran wrap as a temporary window selling fruit from the back of his car. We unintentionally parked right next to him and saw him praying. I couldn't help but go talk to him. Turns out someone broke into his car and took all his money and he was selling fruit to try and get enough money to pay for his parking tickets. After we were done talking with him, we gave him a BOM and a pamphlet. What he didn't know, was I hid $20 in the pamphlet, hoping that he would read it, and that it could help him out a little. By the time we left the parking lot, we saw him reading the pamphlet and he had found the $20.
Hope you all have a good week.
Sister Mandy Welker
Sister Welker got the birthday package we sent her this week. It arrived in New Zealand in time for her birthday, but mail only gets distributed when there is a mission meeting. Fun pictures from the loot below!
